Insane Game Geek Glitch Art Madness

Castlevania loaded in Super Mario Bros. 3:

Gradius II loaded in Gradius:

Castlevania 3: Dracula\'s Curse loaded in Castlevania 2: Simon\'s Quest:

L over at SelectButton has made some amazing glitch art (and music!) by loading the save state from one NES game into a completely different (and thus incompatible) title, under emulation of course. The consequent memory corruption produces a bizarre, glitched out approximation of both games. Is this what happens when you put two NES cartridges into one of Jeff Goldblum’s telepods? Read the thread on their forums for more screens and experiments.

Out of Ink

Monday, August 25th, 2008

I like solarised images and thought I’d decorate the flat with a tweak of that R2D2 Tengui which I posted about last week… Half way through Mount Fuji, the printer ink started to fail… but the old girl still made a valiant effort to get the job done…

If You Could

Monday, August 25th, 2008

The ‘If you could’ project has been going for a few years, illustrators and graphic designers are invited to submit a picture which explores what they would do with the infinite possibilities of tomorrow. They publish a lovely book with the collected images and the 2009 edition will take the form of a diary… I’m really into textures and scrappy detail so I scribbled down this at the last minute, focusing on the ironic theme of preparation.

I thought if someone was actually using it as a diary they should have to write around my illustration… they didn’t agree… it will not be published…

Putting the “Art” in Cartridge

Famicase Exhibition

Famicase Exhibition

Famicase Exhibition

Japan’s recent Famicase exhibition brought us back to the good old days when games came on dirty great chunks of processed oil with circuitry inside, a concept which will no doubt utterly boggle the mind of anyone born after 1989. Generally these “cartridges”, as they were known, came with often not-unattractive art printed in full colour on a sticky label adhered to its front- unless you were unlucky enough to own a Sega Master System…

Centered around Nintendo’s Famicom (slightly better known to us eldsters as the NES), the exhibition’s brief involved Japanese artists designing cartridge labels for fictional game concepts they’d come up with. The subsequent label designs were then mounted on plastic shells and displayed as actual games. Check out the full, deliciously retro selection right here.

Geek Art

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

On the Barcelona side streets, you may notice quite a few pixel mosaics from street artist ‘Invader’. The invasion started on the streets of Paris in the late 90’s, and has now spread to at least 35 citys around the globe. Apparently, marking the locations of the Monpellier pieces on a map, forms a large space invader image. Nice.
